Uttara in Mahabharata: The Princess of Matsya, Arjuna’s Discipleship & Royal Matsya Wedding

In the royal palace of King Virata, young princess Uttara grew up surrounded by music, classical dance, and kingdom festivities. Learning about Uttara in Mahabharata during her youth in the Matsya Kingdom highlights a gentle, cultured princess whose life intersected with the greatest heroes of the epic during the Pandavas’ year of disguise (Agyatvas). While her post-war resilience is chronicled in our story of Uttara’s journey after Abhimanyu’s death, this chronicle explores her Matsya childhood, her discipleship under Arjuna, and the royal alliance that reshaped the Kuru dynasty.

Childhood in the Matsya Kingdom: Daughter of King Virata

Princess Uttara was the cherished daughter of King Virata and Queen Sudeshna, rulers of the Matsya Kingdom with its capital at Upaplavya (Viratnagar). Renowned for its cattle wealth, agrarian abundance, and fine arts, Matsya was a cultured kingdom where princess Uttara was educated in vocal music, vina playing, and classical dance.

The Discipleship: Arjuna as Brihannala in the Royal Court

During their thirteenth year of exile, the five Pandavas and Draupadi entered the Matsya court under secret identities. Arjuna, bound by an ancient celestial curse from the apsara Urvashi, took the form of Brihannala, a skilled dancer and musician wearing bangles and braided hair.

King Virata appointed Brihannala as personal dance tutor to Princess Uttara and her companions. For an entire year, Uttara trained diligently under Brihannala, admiring her teacher’s grace, impeccable rhythm, and gentle discipline, never suspecting that the dancer was the legendary archer of the Gandiva bow.

The Cattle Raid and the Unveiling of the Pandavas

When the Kaurava army launched a surprise cattle raid against Matsya, Uttara’s elder brother, Prince Uttara Kumara, set out to defend the kingdom with Brihannala as his charioteer. Overwhelmed by the sight of Bhishma, Drona, and Karna, the young prince attempted to flee in terror. Brihannala took the reins, retrieved his celestial weapons from the Sami tree, and single-handedly routed the entire Kaurava army.

When the royal family returned victorious and the year of disguise expired, King Virata learned the true identity of his servants. Overcome with gratitude and awe, the king immediately offered Princess Uttara’s hand in marriage to Arjuna.

Arjuna’s Noble Decision: A Daughter-in-Law, Not a Wife

In one of the most noble moments of the epic, Arjuna respectfully declined King Virata’s offer, explaining: ‘For an entire year, I lived in the inner chambers as Uttara’s teacher. A teacher looks upon his student as a daughter. If I were to marry her, the world would question our purity. Instead, let Uttara enter my family as my daughter-in-law, wedded to my son Abhimanyu.’

King Virata was deeply moved by Arjuna’s moral clarity. In the grand city of Upaplavya, Prince Abhimanyu and Princess Uttara were wed in a magnificent celebration attended by Lord Krishna, Balarama, King Drupada, and royal allies, uniting the Matsya dynasty forever with the Pandava lineage.
